1.2 Recognising one's own skills and limitations

Recognising one’s own skills and limitations in the context of providing first aid involves understanding what tasks and procedures one is competent to perform based on their training, experience, and qualifications. It means being aware of one’s capabilities and knowing when to seek assistance or defer to a more experienced individual in situations that exceed one’s expertise. This recognition ensures that first aid is administered effectively and safely, minimising the risk of errors or harm to the casualty. Continuously striving to enhance your first aid abilities is highly recommended. Routinely attend refresher courses and be aware of changes to legislation, first aid codes of practice, policy and procedures and the standards and guidelines in relation to first aid. It is important that a first aider:
  • Acts within the bounds of their training.
  • Does not misrepresent their qualifications.
  • Delivers first aid and/or CPR to the best of their ability to bring about the best outcome for the casualty.
Additionally, engaging in independent reading and research can be beneficial. There’s always room for learning, which ultimately makes you a more proficient first aider. Both the Australian Resuscitation Council and the Safe Work Australia First Aid in the Workplace Code of Practice recommend that all those trained in CPR should refresh their CPR skills at least annually.
